When the group was first started the founding members were asked, "what do you want this group to do "?

The overwhelming response was, to help and support others with a diagnosis of head and neck cancer.

It was decided that the best way to achieve this was to have a presence in the clinics.

However, this was not as straight forward as first thought. All the volunteers needed to be fully trained in cancer support and it was decided to enrol on the MacMillan Cancer Support Course, a 10 month course covering subjects such as listening , knowing your own boundries and communication to name but a few, resulting in an NVQ qualification in cancer support.

All our volunteers are now qualified and the group have made this course an absolute minimum requirement for anyone wishing to volunteer at the clinic. We are now well established at the clinic and as well as talking directly to patients we carry out other duties for the professional staff. We are currently conducting a Quality of Life Survey for Mr Hilgar.

The group has grown a lot since those early days and encompasses much more than just the volunteers but they still work at the clinic, mostly on Wednesdays but can be called upon at most other times.

Please look out for our noticeboards with all our up to date information on in the clinics.

Below are some of the profesionals that you might meet in the clinic at The Ipswich Hospital.
